Assignment #10 - Lighting Set Up & Ratios (and senior information)

Hi everyone!  Here we are at the homestretch with school and I'm proud of you for all you've done with learning while you have been experiencing this history-making pandemic.  I still miss you terribly and wish things could be different and we could together all be in the classroom, all getting excited about summer vacation and seniors' graduation.  However, here is the next online lesson for my beginning students and final exam instructions for my seniors.

First of all, seniors, I will post the final exam tomorrow morning.  Please complete it and email it to me as an attachment at my school email, Lisa.Watson@cobbk12.org.  Underclassmen, I will have a final for you later in May.

For beginning students, here is your lessons on lighting.  Below are two Power Points.  One is on Lighting Set Up and the other is on Lighting Ratios.  Please go through the presentations first and then complete the worksheet above it.  Turn that in by Tuesday (May 12) afternoon.

Here is a great website that explains lighting set up.  https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/basic-light-placements/As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me or text.

Intensity Control through Varying Distance

As the distance between a light source and the subject increases, the light is spread out over a larger area and the intensity decreases.  Figure out the Foot Candles (FC) based on the following problems.  SHOW YOUR WORK!!

1.               If a light at 16 feet away from a subject measures 800 FC, then what is the FC measurement of a light that is 32 feet away?

 2.               If you have the same light that is 16 feet away from a subject and measures 800 FC, what is the distance from the subject that the light would have to be to measure 3200 foot candles?

3.               If you have a light that is 10 feet away from a subject and it measures 450 FC, what is the measurement (in foot-candles) if it is 30 feet away?

4.               If you needed to reduce the intensity of a light that was 8 feet away from your subject from 1200 to 300 foot-candles (FC) you should move the light to a distance of what?

5.               On the 3-point lighting plan diagram below, label the degree of angle between the Key Light and the Fill light.

Lighting Ratios

6.             If the Key light is twice as bright as the fill, the ratio will be 2:1 (which is the standard for color TV).  Using the 2:1 ratio, if the key light is 300 foot-candles (FC), the fill will be what?  ________
PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK BELOW.

7.           Backlight is 1 and a ½ times the Key light.  Assuming the key light intensity is 300 FC, what would the backlight intensity be?  __________________    PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK BELOW.

8.           The background light is of secondary importance to the center of interest and therefore receives a lower level of illumination; about 2/3 of the Key.  If the key is 150 FC, what would the Background light be? ______________ . PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK BELOW.

Lighting Placement

9.          What is the general vertical angle for the Key light in relation to the subject?

10.         Is the Fill light at a slightly higher or lower angle relative to the Key Light?

Watch these Power Points first before completing the Worksheet.
